HCC and TGH Medical Assistant Technician (MAT) Program

The Institute for Corporate and Continuing Education (ICCE) stands ready to assist the employees of Tampa General Hospital. Working together, ICCE and TGH have partnered to offer a clinical medical assistant/medical assistant technician training program with hope of filling many MAT positions within the Tampa General Hospital/Tampa General Medical Group clinics.

Course Details:  Enter the world of healthcare today by performing functions related to the physician’s clinical responsibilities in outpatient and physician offices. Gain hands-on experience in medical office procedures, preparing patients for examination and treatment, performing phlebotomy and lab processing, and running and monitoring electrocardiographs (EKGs).  Receive up to 3 certifications!!

This course includes online self-study, lecture, and skills training labs. Clinical experience is optional at the end of the course.

Course Fee:  $3,299 (Space is limited)

Course fee includes all student materials, including the CCMA national certification study package and certification exam (one time try). EKG and Phlebotomy Certification Exams are an additional fee. Visit NHAnow.com.

Team Members must be employed at TGH for at least six months, working a minimum of 60 hours per pay period and be in good standing with TGH, meaning no second warnings/discipline (ex: verbal, written, suspension) during the past 12 months (please contact Human Resources to confirm status.

*Please note if you do not meet the requirements, you can still enroll into HCC’s MAT Program. The only difference is that you must pay out of pocket, and TGH Reimbursement cannot be utilized.

How to enroll:

Using your TGH benefit:

  1. Employees should apply to TGH HR to use the education benefit. TGH Tuition Assistance Application instructions.
  2. Once approved, you will receive an signed education voucher from HR.  This voucher covers the cost of your course.
  3. Upload this voucher to HCC’s website here. You will be contacted by email from HCC within 3 business days with the next steps to complete your registration.  

PLEASE NOTE: Your registration is not secured until either payment or a voucher has been received by HCC before the first day of the course. Space is limited.

Clinical Experience and Certifications:

Medical Assisting – This course requires at least 100 clinical hours to complete the CMA portion of the training program. You will be assigned to a TGH/TGMG clinical site that is flexible with your schedule.  It is recommended that you are available 16 – 40 hours per week. Clinicals are typically held at outpatient medical centers or private practices.  You must have a flexible schedule and access to transportation.  Once you complete the entire program and required clinical hours, you will receive a certification of completion for the CMA training program and be eligible for certification testing included in your registration fee.

EKG Technician – The EKG portion of the CMA program includes the NHA requirements of running 10 live EKGs. After you complete this part of the curriculum, you will receive a certification of completion for EKG training and be eligible for certification testing. (Additional testing fees apply, and may be covered by TGH/TGMG)

Phlebotomy – The phlebotomy training portion of the CMA program includes performing 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks in class.  

The following are included in the course fee of $3,299:

  • 220+ hours of combined classroom lectures, online self-study and simulation lab
  • Optional 100 + hours of clinical experience for TGH employees only
  • Scrubs
  • NHA CMA materials
  • NHA Study Package and Exam fee for CMA certifications. Phlebotomy and EKG certifications optional for additional fee
