Beer and Brewing Education

We are thrilled to announce that ICCE is offering courses in beer and brewing. From educational and fun courses for the enthusiast to job skills training for the commercial brewery employee, we will be partnering with the Florida Brewers Guild to bring you courses for everyone with an interest in beer or brewing.

This course is intended to help prepare people for the Cicerone Certified Beer Server Exam. Servers and bartenders play a critical role in how beer is perceived by customers. From their knowledge of the styles and choices of beer available to the presentation in the glass, their importance cannot be overlooked. A savvy, trained beer server can make a world of difference to the customer, and ultimately the bottom line of the business.

Much as a “sommelier” designates those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving fine wine, a Certified Cicerone® holds the equivalent expertise in beer. With more of the population moving towards a preference for craft beers, having a qualified expert on your staff sends the message that an establishment has made quality a top priority. Similarly, a certification such as Certified Beer Server makes a potential job seeker that much more attractive to hire.

The Institute for Corporate and Continuing Education at Hillsborough Community College is now offering the first level of certification for beer professionals: the Certified Beer Server. Taught by a Certified Cicerone®, this course will prepare students for the Certified Beer Server exam as well as teach the foundations of the Cicerone® program.

This course includes:
• Classroom instruction led by a Certified Cicerone®
• Tasting Beer reference book by Randy Mosher
• In-class tasting
• Exam prep
• Online exam through

This course is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Cicerone Certification Program.

PLC02Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are a critical part of any modern brewery. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of their use, repair, and functionality, and is ideal for commercial brewery employees of all types. This course begins with basic concepts and progresses to system level applications. The hardware and architecture of PLCs, I/O devices, and motor controls are covered as well as commonly used number systems, such as binary and BCD. Programming is introduced with relay ladder diagrams. The PLC’s practical use in industry is emphasized, and a section on PLC networks in manufacturing is included. Brewery specific examples will be discussed as part of the curriculum.
