Phlebotomy Technician Course *

Length: 90 hrs
Broaden your horizons with a new career in Phlebotomy Technology! This 90 hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods. Note: There is a 24 hour outside externship rotation included with this program.

____1. Complete the Hillsborough Community College – Institute for Corporate and Continuing Education registration form.
____2. Applicant must be 18 years old.
____3. Complete and submit the moral character and student policy forms.
____4. Applicant must be able to read at a 8th grade level.
____5. Complete and submit the Physical Examination Form with completed immunizations. (the cost for the immunization is covered by the student)
This course is approved by the VA.
This program provides the benefits of hands on training in Phlebotomy.
All students are required to perform 30 live venipuncture and 10 live capillary sticks to sit for the National Healthcareer Association Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT).
As a CPT, you’ll draw blood from patients in hospitals, blood centers, or similar facilities for analysis or other medical purposes. As a CPT, you may perform some or all of the following tasks: •Perform basic phlebotomy procedures •Evaluate patients for ability to withstand venipuncture procedure •Explain the venipuncture procedure and answer patient questions •Perform basic point of care testing, such as blood glucose levels on patients •Prepare blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens for testing according to established standards
Note: The Phlebotomy Technician Certification program (CPT) is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and issues CPT certifications through National Healthcareer Association, Inc.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to identify and explain basic anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, perform skin punctures, various types of live venipuncture procedures with confidence using standard precautions, prepare specimens for laboratory use, and learn all aspects of a Phlebotomy Tech's role in the clinical area.
